POWER OF ATTORNEY FOR THE SALE OF CHAMETZ

I, the undersigned, fully empower and authorise Rabbi A Chapper to act in my place and stead and, on my behalf, to sell any Chametz possessed by me (knowingly or unknowingly) up to and including Friday 19 April 2019 at 11.49am including any food in respect of which there is a doubt or possibility that it might contain Chametz, and all kinds of Chametz mixtures, and to lease all places wherein the Chametz owned by me is stored and found, especially in the premises specified below, or elsewhere.

Rabbi A Chapper has full authority to sell or lease all Chametz and all places wherein the Chametz owned by me is found, by any transaction in any manner which he deems fit and proper, and for such time as he believes necessary, in accordance with the detailed terms and conditions set out in the agreed Contract or Sale which he will draw up. This authorisation is made a part of that Contract.

I also give Rabbi A Chapper power and authority to appoint any proxy he deems fit in his place, with full power to sell or lease as provided herein.

The above-given powers are to be exercised in conformity with all Torah and Rabbinical regulations and laws, and also in accordance with the laws of the country.

In witness thereof I will fill in my full name as a digital signature.

Once you complete the process you should receive a confirmation E-Mail. If you do not receive this your details may not have been recorded. Paper forms will be available.

If anyone would like to make a formal kinyan for the Sale of Chametz, Rabbi Chapper will be available after Shacharit on Sunday 14th April at Croxdale Road.  Please bring with a completed Sale of Chametz form.

Please note: If someone fails to sell Chametz before Pesach they may never eat nor benefit from it, even after Pesach has finished. Such Chametz must be given away to a non-Jew or destroyed.

Thursday 18 April - Begin searching for chametz after 8:57pm

Friday 19 April - Stop eating chametz by 10:39am and burn chametz by 11:49am

Please do not access or eat your Chametz until 9.45pm on 27 April to allow time for Rabbi Chapper to buy back the Chametz after Yom Tov has ended.

BES Sale of Chametz

The Torah prohibits us from owning any type of Chametz during the festival of Pesach (Passover). In principle, a person has the option of consuming all his/her Chametz before Pesach, giving it away, destroying it or renouncing all ownership of it. In practice it is often not possible to dispose of all the Chametz before Pesach, nor can a person be relied upon to genuinely renounce ownership of a significant amount of Chametz. Moreover, a person may have Chametz in his/her possession of which he/she is unaware.

As a response to this situation the practice of “Selling the Chametz” began nearly two thousand years ago during the time of the Mishnah. Originally, each Jew would sell his/her own Chametz to a gentile and there would be an exchange of goods and money. Nowadays, in order to ensure that all legal requirements of a contract of sale are satisfied people usually appoint the Rabbi as their agent for selling the Chametz to a gentile. At the same time they must make sure that all Chametz is locked away in a designated room or closet so as not to come in contact with it over Pesach. After Pesach the Rabbi buys back the Chametz though this is not made a specific condition of the sale. It should be noted that Chametz, which remains in one’s possession during Pesach, is prohibited for use afterwards.

In order to ensure that no Chametz remains in your possession over Pesach please fill in this online form. Chametz at your place of business ought to be sold as well.

With many thanks.
Yours sincerely,

Rabbi A Chapper

NB. As you fill out the approximate value of Chametz to be sold on the next page, remember that whisky, beer and gin are Chametz as well.

This form is only for selling YOUR Chametz. If relevant your husband / wife or other people should complete the form again themselves to sell their Chametz.
